One Reason To Re-Evaluate Your Friends

Here is a fact, two people can’t walk together if they are headed in different directions.  It’s simply not possible.  So let me ask you, are the people you are walking with headed in the direction you want to go, or more importantly in the direction you need to go? Are you headed toward success and God’s best or in some other direction?  Well, based upon your answer maybe it’s time you start evaluating your walking buddies.

Have you heard the phrase, birds of a feather flock to together?  It’s a saying that simply means that people who have similar characters, interests, lifestyles, goals, etc. tend to spend time together and people who spend a lot of time together tend to be headed in the same direction. Which is why the Bible poses this rhetorical question in Amos 3:3, “Can two walk together unless they be agreed?”  And the reality is no, two people can’t walk together unless they are agreed.  It’s like having a friend who desires to travel to New York and you want to travel to California no matter where your starting point is at some point in time your paths will separate and you will no longer be walking together.

Yet the problem arises, when although you want to head to California, for some reason you find yourself walking right next to your friend headed towards New York, a place you never intended to go.  Now this scenario can play out in several different ways. For instance, you want to accomplish big things in life but you’re walking with someone who doesn’t see the importance of being goal driven and the next thing you know you’re headed to the state of unfulfillment.  Or, you’re seeking positive change in your life but you’re walking with someone who is constantly negative and instead of reaching the state of positive change you find yourself headed toward the state of negativity and misery, again a place you never wanted to go.

So if you care about the direction your life is headed it simply makes sense to evaluate the people you are “walking with.”  Your happiness, your purpose, and your life achievements can be deeply impacted by those you surround yourself with.  Now it’s not my place to tell you which friends you should or should not be walking with that’s for you to determine.  However, I will say that there is one person that you absolutely have to walk with and that person is God. Because when you walk with Him you find yourself walking down paths that lead to peace, great accomplishments, love, happiness, solid relationships, and eventually eternal life.

So what do you think about all this? What have your personal experiences been with those you’ve walked with?  Why don’t you let us know by leaving a comment below.  Also be sure to encourage somebody else by sharing this post.
