Joshua, the man who became the leader of the Israelites after Moses, was one of the most successful men that ever lived. He experienced great success as a leader and man of God. However his life of success did not occur by happenstance it occurred because he implemented five simple strategies that guaranteed his success. Thankfully these strategies are not exclusive to him. They are strategies that you can implement right now that are sure to be instrumental in your life’s success.
Strategy #1: Become a Humble Student
Joshua understood the importance of learning from those ahead of him. For 40 years he humbly and attentively followed and learned from the leadership of Moses. As a student he developed the character and skills that were critical to his future success. Never once did he allow the skills he had developed to go to his head. Instead he recognized the value of Moses’ leadership and humbly learned all he could from the great leader.
Strategy #2: Know the Source and the Secret to Success
Joshua knew who the source of all success was and the secret needed to acquire it. We know this because when Joshua took the place of Moses as the great leader of Israel God had some real talk with him. He informed Joshua in no uncertain terms that He was with him and that if he wanted to be prosperous and have good success he must mediate on the word of God day and night. See Joshua 1:9. Joshua believed God and understood that He was the giver of prosperity and success and he also understood the requirements to receive that gift.
Strategy #3: Follow God’s Instructions No Matter What
It wasn’t enough for Joshua to simply hear or know God’s instructions, he must also follow them. Whatever God told Joshua to do he did it, without question. This type of obedience to the giver of success is crucial for the out pouring of the blessing. God is not interested in back talk, indecision, or individuals who choose their own way. Strict obedience is what He requires. Joshua understood this.
Strategy #4: Stand for Principle and Never Follow the Crowd
Joshua was a man of principle. He stood up for what he believed to be true and didn’t allow others to sway him with their feelings of doubt or negativity. This was evident when Moses sent him, along with eleven other men as spies to the land of Canaan. Principle told Joshua that if God said the land is ours, then it is, regardless of what the odds look like. Principle also told him to give a good report regarding what he believed even if it cost him his life. See Numbers 14:7-10.
Strategy #5: Exercise Ridiculous Faith
Joshua exhibited crazy faith! C’mon now, let’s just be honest. If we were flies on the wall back in the day when Joshua was leading the people of Israel around Jericho’s wall we likely would’ve considered him a fool. He would’ve been the butt of many jokes. Yet, Joshua wasn’t concerned about what anyone thought about him, nor was he concerned about how ludicrous God’s command to march around the walls might have seemed. Joshua’s only concern was putting his full faith and trust in God. As a result he exercised ridiculous faith and it was this type of faith that guaranteed his success at the battle of Jericho.
There is no doubt in my mind that Joshua’s decision to implement these five strategies caused the God of the Universe to smile upon him and bless him with great success. God delights in blessing His children, but He needs more folks to implement these strategies just like Joshua did.
So ask yourself these questions, are you experiencing the type of success you desire in your life? Are you implementing Joshua’s five strategies of success into your daily life? If not, why not.
Homework: Living a successful life should be one of our greatest goals. To make this a reality we need to do some self reflection. Take a moment and identify which of Joshua’s strategies you have been using. Now identify the ones you haven’t. Next to the ones you haven’t list all of the reasons why. Could it be fear, self-dependence, or any other thing? Now ask God to help you in these areas and commit to making the change right now.
