The Problem with Snakes

I don’t like snakes.  I mean, I really don’t like snakes.  Why? Well, because they bite and many of them are poisonous.  So I, along with the majority of the population do my very best to avoid them.  But did you know that there are people who actually go around allowing themselves to be bitten by the worst of snakes?  As crazy as it sounds, it’s true.  So stick with me for a moment and I’ll explain.

Snakes are a big deal because they are small in size but can be extremely dangerous.  Many of them contain a poisonous venom, and this venom is no joke!  It has the power to shut down the body completely and it does this by attacking your organs.  Let’s take your lungs for example, a snakes venom will cause your lungs to slowly become inactive until they are paralyzed and you can no  longer breathe.  So it goes without saying that if a snakes venom has the the power to shut down your organs it has the power to kill you. So naturally everybody, including the snake lovers should do their best to avoid being bitten by snakes.

Now what’s interesting is that the Bible in Revelation 20:2 refers to the devil as the ancient serpent or snake.  And it is a fitting description because like a snake, the devil seeks to inject us with his venom so that we will die a spiritual death.  But here is the problem, we don’t try to avoid the venom of the enemy with the same effort that we try to avoid the venom of the snakes that slither around on the ground.  It seems to be that we are more afraid of physical venom that comes from the fangs of snakes than we are of spiritual venom that is spewed out of the mouth of the devil.

The truth is that spiritual venom has more detrimental consequences on our lives. You see when the devil injects you with his venom, like the venom of a snake,  it slowly begins to lessen the strength of your spiritual muscles till they eventually become paralyzed and useless.  And that is deadly.  So we must ask ourselves the question, “How is the devil,  that ancient serpent, injecting his venom into our lives?”  Well he does it by using people who speak his venom into our ears by whispering negative things true or untrue about others into our spirit.  This is a problem because it can lead to the paralysis of healthy relationships.  Or often he uses entertainment to poison our mind with filthy language, sinful practices, and ungodly themes that will eventually lead to the paralysis of the growth of our character, the death of the fulfillment of our purpose, and the death of the spark that God placed within us to move to greater.

What we have to understand is that the devil’s venom is deadly.  And like the venom of a snake that slowly begins to shut down all of your organs, and eventually kill you, the venom of the enemy will slowly devastate your life until you are spiritually dead.  So what you must do is start to identify the areas of your life in which you are allowing yourself to be bitten and injected with his venom.  Examine the conversations you have with your co-workers, your friends, and your loved ones.  Start to think about the music you listen to, the tv you watch or the books you read.  Take the time to identify where your negative thought processes come from and determine to stop letting the devil bite you.

But here is something amazing I need to share with you.  If you have discovered that there have been times in which you have allowed yourself to be bitten by the enemy don’t fret because all has not been lost.  There is an anti venom named Jesus Christ and He has the power to go into your mind and not only stop but reverse the effects of the poison the enemy has injected into your life!  All you have to do is accept Him.
