How To Fight To Win

Are you a fighter?  Are you the type of person who is ready to throw some blows and get down and dirty if the occasion should arise?  Or are you more reminiscent of the individual who specialized in the art of trash talking?  Are you a fighter?  Well I hope you are because if you want to live the extraordinary life God desires for you, then you are going to have to roll up your sleeves and fight.

Have you ever watched someone shadow box?  If you have then you know that no matter how aggressive a shadow boxer may appear to be, their punches make no impact. Regardless if its a jab, an uppercut or a left hook, the shadow boxer has no real target and they are doing nothing more than punching in the air.

Now what is interesting is the fact that the apostle Paul wasn’t about that shadow boxing life.  When he found himself in the boxing ring of life, he intended to make his efforts count.  Which is why he says in 1 Corinthians 9:26, “Thus I fight; not as one who beats the air.”  Paul was basically saying that when he threw a punch he made every jab, every upper cut, and every hook count.  Why?  Well, because Paul was a fighter and he was fighting the good fight.  He understood that his life, his mission, and his time, were too important not to make every single punch count.  He was definitely about that fight life and you have to be too.

Everything you do should have a positive impact on your life and the life of others. You can’t afford to throw air punches when God has given you the authority to defeat the enemy (See Luke 10:19). But when you fail to tap into that power you are doing nothing more than shadow boxing, throwing punches that have no impact.

This often happens when you say you believe in God but when things don’t go your way your faith waivers, or when you know the good news of the risen Savior but you never share it or when you claim the name of Christ but your life doesn’t reflect Christ.  That’s not how you fight the good fight, that is how you shadow box.  So why not take a lesson from Paul’s playbook and make sure that each and every one of your punches counts!
