This morning I was running late to take my son to his appointment. I hurriedly grab the kids some breakfast and dashed into the car. The moment I was ready to pull off I realized that I didn’t have my cell phone. The horror! I was now facing a dilemma. Do I sacrifice another five minutes to get my phone and arrive even later to his appointment, or do I drive off? What if something happened, what if I needed to contact my husband in an emergency or what if someone needed to contact me and more importantly how would I pass the time at the doctor’s office if I couldn’t scroll through facebook on my phone? I quickly evaluated the situation. My mind was made up. Although having my phone was not a necessity, I couldn’t leave home without it.
As I reflected upon this situation I was reminded of something that is a necessity that I can’t leave home without, and that is the covering of God. In life we often prioritize things that aren’t really important at all and neglect those things that are of greatest value. God’s covering over our lives is of the greatest importance. To leave home without it could result in spiritual suicide.
The beautiful thing is that God’s protective covering is offered to us at no cost. All He asks in return is that we spend time with Him each day. Those precious moments we dedicate to communing with our Savior yield the greatest results. We are drawn closer to God, receive spiritual power, and are equipped to meet the challenges of the day. That is a covering we can’t afford to leave home without.
