Change Begins With What Comes Out of Our Mouths

Most of us fail to realize the power of our words.  The words that come out of our mouths are often a direct reflection of our mindset.  The bible says that, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”  Proverbs 18:21.  The words we speak will have a negative or positive impact upon our lives.  Therefore, the much needed transformation many of us desire can be impeded or facilitated by the words we speak into existence?

I believe that what we allow to come out of our mouths is a direct reflection of the fruit we produce in our lives.  To illustrate this point, let us turn to nature, one of God’s greatest lesson books and focus on the caterpillar.

The caterpillar was created to become a beautiful butterfly.  However, this process is dependent upon what comes out of the caterpillar’s mouth.  To become a butterfly the caterpillar must first transform into a pupa or chrysalis.  This process cannot occur until the caterpillar spins a silk pad that it will attach itself to.  Once this occurs the process of transformation will begin.  The silk used to create this pad comes out of the caterpillar’s mouth.  In essence the caterpillar is spewing from its mouth the thing it needs to promote positive change in its life.

What a lesson we can learn from these tiny creatures.  If we allow life building words to come out of our mouths it can change the entire course of our lives for the good.  We can speak life into our spirits, our dreams, our aspirations, our relationships, our careers, or whatever it may be.  We must carefully guard the words that come out of our mouths.  The reality is we can be our own worst enemies.  We can allow so much doubt and negativity to come out of us that we can never be transformed into the beautiful butterflies God intends for us to be.  Don’t believe me?  Take a look at the Isreaelites.

God frees Israel from the bondage of Egypt.  Instead of rejoicing in the evolving transformation of their status and their lives, they choose to speak death.   “And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!”  Numbers 14:2.  Despite all that God had done for them they chose to speak death, and they got their wish.  This multitude of grumblers and complainers laid their heads to rest in the wilderness never seeing the promised Land.

What words do you allow to come out of your mouth?  Are you constantly spewing out verbal poison or are you speaking words that will bring life to your situation.  God instructs us in Ephesians 4:29 to, “ Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”  With that said, speak life!
